AMC3302: Maximum supply requirement

Part Number: AMC3302

Tool/software:

Hi,

In the AMC3302 datasheet, section 6.9, the IDD Low-side supply current is 42 mA (max) (section 6.5, maximum power dissipation: 231mW). Also in Section 6.8, the Is safety input, output or supply current is 309mA (VDD = 5.5V) (safety input, output or total power: 1700mW).

Any supply current above 309mA or power dissipation above 1700mW will damage the isolation barrier and damage the low side circuit. Do we need to use any SMD fuse in the power supply lines to protect the isolation barrier damage?

Could you please recommend the suitable fuse ratings for the high side and low side circuit?

Thanks & regards,

  • Hi Ilamparithi,

Thank you for your questions. Yes, you would need to take some precaution to protect against expected high currents above these outlined conditions. One way could be to use an SMD fuse on the power line as you mention. Another recommendation would be to include overcurrent protection circuitry, similar to what is outlined in this app note. This way when overcurrent is detected, the isolation barrier can be protected by shutting down all electronics once the specified threshold is surpassed.

Please let me know if there are more questions.

    Best regards,

    Eva
