USB2ANY: RFFE communication with USB2ANY

Part Number: USB2ANY
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: LM8335, LM3279, MSP430F5510

Tool/software:

Hi TI expert,

1) Does USB2ANY support th RFFE communication?

2) We have to validate the USB2ANY for RFFE communication. Does TI have any reference design or EVM kit with them user can quickly test USB2ANY for RFFE interface communication?

  • In theory, USB2ANY supports some subset of RFFE, as documented by the API reference. Having never used it myself, I'm not sure.

Either the LM3279 or the LM8335 appear to be the best bets. I suspect that most devices for which USB2ANY RFFE was targeted are over a decade old at this point. I will link the relevant support on this thread, perhaps they have more insight.

Concerning backward compatibility of next-generation platforms with USB2ANY, I don't think there are any teams internally who would be gravely affected by the absence of RFFE. Again, we'll check with the product owners for the devices mentioned above, but it seems to me like the use case is either outdated or solved by alternate means.

  • Thanks  , You are awesome! You truly understand the many unwritten words and concerns in the trade.

Just adding my analysis for LM3279 and LM8335 over here for reference.

    1) Evaluation Module of LM8335 (https://www.ti.com/tool/LM8335EVM) has an internal MCU (MSP430F5510) for USB to RFFE comminication.

    2) Evaluation Module of LM3279 (https://www.ti.com/lit/ug/snou093/snou093.pdf) refer the LM8335 EVM for RFFE comminication & GUI interface.

The above points could explain, why LM3279 and LM8335 owners/users may not interested in RFFE communication support in the next-generation platforms of USB2ANY.

  • Hi,

the LM3279 is a real old device and as Derek mentioned, the GUI for controlling the EVM is using the LM8335 RFFE Interface Evaluation Module to convert USB to RFFE. So no need for USB2ANY.

Newer Buck Converter are usually using I2C control and the GUI for the EVMs is using USB2ANY. As an example see https://www.ti.com/tool/TPS62866EVM-051.

I'm not aware of newer converter with a RFFE Interface.

    Best regards,

    Andreas.
