THS3202: Part alternatives?

Hi TI, I've noticed that the THS3201 and the double variant THS3202 are not recommended for new designs.

Are you planning to release an opamp with comparable or better specs?

Because these parts are ideal for making a 4Vpp signal in a 50Ohm load with a decent rise and fall time.

  • Hello Raymond, For a 4Vpp signal you are looking at large signal in which case the slew rate and large signal bandwidth are critical. The THS3091 is one alternative...it has higher slew rate than the THS3201.

  • The downside is that the THS3091 has a way lower gain bandwidth. The THS3201 has a GBW of 1.8GHz, but the THS3091 has a GBW of 235MHz.
    So that's not a viable option for me.

    It sounded from the last email that you were looking for a large signal pulse. In that case I would assume that you care primarily about the rise and fall time of the signal- correct? What is your requirement on rise/fall time? Check out the LMH6702 and the THS3061. Their rise/fall times are very competitive.

    Also, is your current requirement for a large volume of devices...if it is just a few devices that you will be hand-testing for evaluation in the lab, then you could still use the THS3201/02. Its just for very large volumes that the THS3201 has some manufacturing challenges.

  • Rise and fall times I can currently achieve with the THS3201/THS3202 are around 1 to 1.2ns for a 4Vpp pulse in a 50ohm load (8Vpp in 100ohms), resulting in a slew rate of 8V/ns. Concerning bandwidth, if I take the rule of thumb that BW(GHz)=0.35/RT(ns) would result in a bandwidth of at least 350MHz and to be useful as an amplifier I need a gain of at least 4. It would be nice if it could be faster, but there doesn't seem to be anything better than the THS3201/THS3202 on the market.

    So I had hoped that TI was about to release a modern successor.

    Luckily I don't require huge amounts, although I have started a stash after it was announced that they were not recommended for new designs. I guess I'm not the only one as prices have increased about 30% compared to a few months ago.

    I was wondering, even if it poses manufacturing challenges, will TI keep producing these chips(in low volume, at high price?) if there is no new(better) chip? Or is the line simply closed and the current stocks are the last ones?)

    TI will keep producing these chips and will not obsolete theTHS3201/02. We are investigating a successor device, however with regards to the details, I cannot comment on that on a public forum or without an NDA.

  • Thank you, that is a good enough answer for now.
    I will then keep using the THS3201/THS3202 in my designs(which are not mass produced).
    It's good to know at least that there is R&D ongoing to design a successor chip. I guess it will pop up in the "new products" list eventually.
