Looking for device recommendations

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: OPA858, LMH5401

Hello,

We have a customer is building a balanced receiver for a LIDAR application, who is looking for a transimpedance amplifier capable of the following:

300MHZ (ideally 600MHZ or more)
differential outputs

For LIDAR applications, do we have any recommendations for a TIA?

Thanks,

  • Hi Gabriel,

Do you know the transimpedance (TIA) gain being requested for the LIDAR application? Also, the photodiode capacitance or the photodiode part number would be extremely helpful to calculate out feasibility of the TIA circuit.

It is possible that the OPA858 might fit as a TIA for LIDAR application because its GBW product is 5.5 GHz and FET input. However, I think the targeted TIA gain and photodiode capacitance would be needed in-order to suggest the right circuit for customer's LIDAR application.

    Best Regards,
    Rohit
  • Hi Rohit,

The OPA858 might work. The PD that we are planning to use has a capacitance of around 1 pF and our customer is asking for a transimpedance gain of around 4k for now. According to your TIA calculator spreadsheet, this will give us a 3 dB bandwidth of close to 350 MHz (assuming 0.8 pF OPA858 input capacitance), which meets the minimum requirements.

Our customer would prefer 600 MHz bandwidth if that's possible. Do you have any recommendations?

    Thanks, Reinald

  • Hi Reinald,

Sorry for the delay in response.

Would the customer be willing to have lower than 4k transimpedance gain with 600MHz bandwidth? I think we might be able to make something work with the OPA858 if that's the case.

It might also be interesting for you to take a look at this Linear transimpedance amplifier design using the LMH5401: www.ti.com/.../tidud08.pdf. This is a differential TIA design that can achieve 600MHz bandwidth with 3.57kohms of transimpedance gain.

I am not sure whether you are looking for any specific architecture for the TIA such as single-ended or differential output and the output voltage range. If it is ok, I can send an email to your profile email address and you can then reply with any specifics offline.

    Best Regards,
    Rohit
