ONET8551T: Differential Output - Recommended Part

Part Number: ONET8551T
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ONET8501PB

Dear All,

I see from the data sheet the ONET8551T has a differential output. I assume a differential amplifier would be needed to connect to the differential output and thereby suppress noise? If so, is there a recommended TI differential amplifier for this purpose?

I hope somebody can help.

Best wishes,

Matthew

  • What is your intended application?
  • Hi Matthew,

It is not always necessary to accompany the ONET8551T differential output with a differential amplifier, unless the input signal is very weak. If the input signal is weak and there is not sufficient output from the ONET8551T, then it's possible to follow its output with the ONET8501PB which is a limiting amplifier that boosts up the signal even further.

The noise suppression does not necessarily occur unless you are limiting the BW of the TIA. It would be good to understand the intended application in-order to suggest the right part, as Micah suggested.

    Best Regards,
    Rohit
  • Dear Rohit,

Many thanks for your rapid response - I will look at using the ONET8501PB to connect to the differential output of the ONET8551T.

From your comment you imply that its possible to limit the bandwidth of the ONET8551T to suppress noise? Looking at the datasheet I can't see how to do this, though I've seen this feature for other TI TIAs. Hopefully you can clarify.

To answer both Micah and Rohit, my intended application is to use the ONET8551T for as a preamplifier-receiver.

    Many thanks and best wishes,

    Matthew
  • Hi Matthew,

I meant that one way to limit noise of an amplifier is to limit its BW. You are right that the ONET8551T does not have bandwidth limitation feature. This instead could be done by using the rate selection feature of the ONET8501PB that follows the ONET8551T.

    Best Regards,
    Rohit
