TPA2008D2

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPA2008D2

Hi Sir

We had some question for TPA2008D2  design in datasheet.

1. The following figure is L/R channel each output power limitation or L+R total output power limitation?

2. After clearing the first question, can we define L/R Max. Out Power(package limit) that  3W@3ohm  /  2.5W@4ohm  / 1.5W@8ohm  by Q1 figure?

Thanks Winston

  • Hi Winston,

Please take a look at my comments below:
    1. The plot shows output power for each channel, not the sum of them.
    2. Yes, you can use this plot for reference on the output power availability. Although you can also consider Figures 6, 7 and 8 from the data sheet as these plots show the output distortion vs output power.

  • Hi Ivan
Thanks your feedback , we had one more question as below

Example for this design in TPA2008D2
    A. input is 1.2 Vrms from Audio codec.
    B. Speaker is 2W/8 ohm
    C. Gain is 10dB, Av=3.16227
    D.Output Power=(input*Gain)^2/R=1.79999

TPA2008D2 output power availability is 1.5W@8ohm, but our design output power is 1.79999W that is over TPA2008D2 spec.
Q1: What is the risk in this condition? IC TPA2008D2 will damage? or sound distortion only?

    Thanaks Winston
  • Winston,

The output power spec is given for a specific distortion level (THD+N). Figure 8 shows output power vs distortion for 8ohm load.
If output power goes over this level, the distortion will increase. If this condition remains for long periods of time, it could heat up the device and thermal protection would be triggered.
