INA230: Power Dissipation

Part Number: INA230

Dear Team,

May I know this IC's maximum power dissipation?

The engineer need to check the thermal performance,

  • Hi Kuan,

    as the INA230 does not provide an output intended to drive an arbitrary load, like an OPAmp e.g., the heat dissipation of INA230 is very low. The heat dissipation will only rise, if the INA230 is wired atypically. Then, the heat dissipation can be estimated from the absolute maximum ratings.

  • Dear Team,

    So what is the maximum value?

  • Hello Kuan,

    As long as the junction temperature does not exceed 150°C, then the device has not exceeded its absolute maximum rating.

    Anyway to determine the maximum power INA230 can dissipate under normal operating conditions we can assume VS=3.3V and VIN+=VIN-=VCM_max = 30V. Total power = Vs*IQ +VCM*IB.

    So for I2C SCL frequency < 10kHz and TA = 25°C,
    Ps = 3.3V*320µA =1.056mW
    PCM = 30V*20µA = 0.6mW
    Ptotal = 1.656mW.

    For I2C SCL frequency < 10kHz and TA = 125°C,
    Ps = 3.3V*395µA = 1.3035mW
    PCM = 30V*20µA = 0.6mW
    Ptotal = 1.9035mW.

    For I2C SCR frequency = 2MHz and 25°C,
    Ps = 3.3V*480µA = 1.584mW
    PCM = 0.6mW
    Ptotal = 2.184mW

    In order to determine IQ and IB, I used Figures 13, 14, 16, and 18 of the datasheet.

    Hope this address the question.

    Best,
    Peter
