Programmable Gain instrumentation amplifiers (PGAs) are used in a large diversity of applications including data acquisition systems, high precision signal instrumentation and universal input industrial analog inputs.
PGA's are very often used as signal conditioner circuits driving Analog-to-Digital converters (ADCs) and therefore the binary gain steps may be applicable increasing the resolution of the measurement to use the full dynamic range of the ADC scaling the signal amplitude.
They are also used in a variety of applications and therefore the decade gain steps may be useful for end systems in front of wide dynamic range sensors and instrumentation.
