LMH5401-SP: Operating temperature range

Part Number: LMH5401-SP

Hi Experts,

For the military qualified device, the –55°C to 125°C temperature range should refer to junction temperature or ambient temperature?  LMH5401-SP datasheet shows its operating junction temperature is  –55°C to 125°C,  but customer said a military qualified device should have an ambient temperature range of  –55°C to 125°C. Could you please help to check which one is correct? Thank you.

  • Hey Arie,

Pretty sure it is junction temperature at -55C to 125C for any mil device. And, for space, you have case temp control (no ambient) so the temp rise from case temp would due to the case to junction thermal impedance and internal power dissipation - I doubt anyone would let the case temp go to 125C in space.

  • Hi Arie,

I agree with Michael on this one, at least in the world of ICs the military spec usually refers to the junction temperature rather than ambient temp. Interestingly, in space the ambient temp technically depends where the device is, such as its orbital height from Earth.

I can confirm that for this device the -55C to 125C range refers to the junction temperature. The instantaneous absolute max junction temperature is given as 150C, but if the junction temperature exceeds 125C in continuous operation, the long-term reliability of the device may suffer. We recommend keeping the junction temperature within this -55C to 125C range for long-term operation.

    Cheers,

    Jon
