TLE2141: TLE2141 ISSUE

Part Number: TLE2141
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TLE2144

Hi Team,

My customer is evaluating TLE214x to drive capacitive load. The output of TLE2141 is either DC -2.5V or -6.3V.

With 0.01uF load and 10ohm output impedance, we find that there has huge transient current of the amp’s output as shown below. This transient current exceed the maximum output ability (±80mA) of TLE214x.

Customer cannot increase the output impedance resistor to reduce the transient current.

My questions are:

1.How large and how long transient current does TLE2141 can bear? I worry about it do harms to the device if exceeding ±80mA.
2.Datasheet says “The devices are stable with capacitive loads up to 10 nF, although the 6-MHz bandwidth decreases to 1.8 MHz at this high loading level”. Does it mean that TLE2141x can bear huge transient current?
3.Does ±80mA means total current for all channels? If using TLE2144, each with ±20mA?

Thanks a lot.

  • Hi Yang,

    a limit is a limit :-)

The output current must not exceed +/-80mA in prolonged or repeated operation.

Have you thought about using the dual feedback method, discussed here:

This would allow a higher current limiting resistor within the feedback loop.

  • Hello Yang,

1.How large and how long transient current does TLE2141 can bear? I worry about it do harms to the device if exceeding ±80mA.

Adding to Kai's mention of limits, the TLE2141 typical short-circuit output current (Ios) is listed as -25 mA min, -50 mA typ sourcing, and 20 mA min, 31 mA typ sinking, with +/-15 V supplies. The Ios is limited by the TLE2141 output stage transistor ON resistance and when added to the 10 Ohm R1 resistance it is unlikely that the output could get up to the absolute maximum output current of +/-80 mA. The +/-80 mA is the maximum current that the TLE2141 output can safely handle if subjected to a condition that would result in that high of current.

Do keep in mind that simulation models are a simplification of the actual device and although providing close approximations of performance, some parameters are less accurate than others.

2.Datasheet says “The devices are stable with capacitive loads up to 10 nF, although the 6-MHz bandwidth decreases to 1.8 MHz at this high loading level”. Does it mean that TLE2141x can bear huge transient current?

This mention is about the TLE2141 stability with a 10 nF capacitive load, and doesn't imply anything about transient current capability.

3.Does ±80mA means total current for all channels? If using TLE2144, each with ±20mA?

The absolute maximum output (Io) rating of ±80mA is per each amplifier section.

  • Hi Tomas,

Got it. I will make a bench test to see the results.

    thanks for your help.

  • Hi Kai,

Got it. I will take a look at the video.

    thanks for your help.
