DRV135: Audio Line Driver circuit review request.

Part Number: DRV135
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DRV134, , OPA1678, OPA1679

Hi TI,

Audio Codec L, R Output The DRV135UA (6dB AMP) is attached to each line to configure the circuit to perform Single Ended output.

On the datasheet, only DRV134 is shown for Single Ended output.

DRV135 also check if there is no problem with Single Ended output and if there is no problem with the circuit configuration given below.

Thank you.

  • Hi BJ,

It's definitely possible to use the DRV135 in a single-ended configuration, however the circuit you provided will not work. First, the total supply is too low. The DRV135 datasheet specifies a minimum ±4.5V supply, or 9V. I also see no recommendation in the datasheet to use a single supply, rather than split supplies.

Since this circuit is taking a single-ended input, amplifying it by 2x, and providing a single-ended output, why not use an op amp configured for a gain of 2? Using an amplifier such as the OPA1678/OPA1679 would give you the 2x gain for your outputs with a lower BOM cost, even with a single 5V supply.

I simulated a simple noninverting configuration like this:

Which gave a flat 6dB gain across the audio band. I included a 600 ohm load resistance in the schematic above when I simulated it, but it is not required in the design itself - it just accounts for possible loading on the output of the circuit.

  • BJ,
Sorry for splitting my reply to this into two parts. Depending on the input signal level from your codec, the above circuit may not be a perfect solution - If your input swings ~.7V negative, the OPA1678 will distort as its input common mode range only extends .5V above the negative rail (ground for the circuit above). Given more information about the output from your codec, there may be better alternatives to my circuit above.
  • Hi Alex,

The signal input to the AMP from the Audio Codec output is the MAX Vpp 1V Swing signal.

This is for swing to Max Vpp 2V by using AMP.

    Thank you.
