AMC1311-Q1: Can I use an analog Isolator backwards?

Part Number: AMC1311-Q1
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: AMC1311, AMC1301

Hello,

i want to Transfer a analog Signal (+/- 2V) from the low voltage side galvanic isolated to the high voltage side with the AMC1311. Is this possible or is there any technical issue against this Operation mode?

If this is not possible, can you submit other Options or parts for the technical realization? The Signal Transfer time should be fast <5µs.

Best regards

Daniel

  • Hi Daniel,

of course, you would need to turn the AMC1311 arround and connect the input signal to the input side of AMC1311. :-)

Also, keep in mind that an input voltage below -0.1V is not possible. See figure 22 and section 7.3 of datasheet.

One remedy is to offset and rescale the input voltage so that your input voltage span of -2V...+2V falls into the window 0V...+2V. A simple voltage divider consisting of three resistors could provide this. For the offsetting you would need a stable supply voltage or reference voltage, though.

Or use one of these isolators:

You may use AMC1301 instead which accepts Bipolar Signals of 0-250 mV .
    You would require a 1:10 ( or 1:8 ) Divider at the Input .

This is an alternative to the good suggestion by Kai ; which shall require
a stable Vref and additional precision Resistors

Remember to use a Res in series with VINN equal to the Req in Series with VINP .

    Say your Input Divider has R & 9R and the Mid point is connected to VINP ;
then your VINN ; istead of being connected to HV Side Gnd directly ; should be connected thru'
    a Series Res of 0.9 R .

AMC1301 can transfer your Analog Data in 3 uS approx .

I've used a good number of them & they are good .
