Ua741cp voltage clamping

I have a Ua741cp op amp and have noticed that it has a lower clamp of 2 volts and an upper clamp of -.5 volts from peak. I need to have a lower clamp of .5 volts or less. Is this chip defective? If it is not what model do I need to use to have a .5 volt lower clamp with the same package and pin configuration?

    Hi Christian,

    The uA741 amplifier does not have a rail-to-rail output stage.  This means that the min/max voltage that the output stage of the amplifier can produce is smaller than the voltage on the supply rails. 

    A quick search using the Amplifier Selection Tool for rail-to-rail output stages with a max supply voltage up to +/- 15V yielded the following results:

    OPA251
    OPA244
    OPA241
    OPA237
    OPA234
    OPA211A
    OPA211

    Since there wasn't a lot of information I just guessed that the high-supply voltage was a requirement, if it is not, there are many other choices as well that may work for you and I would encourage you to try to search for the ideal amplifier for your application using the Selection Tool located in the "Amplifiers and Linear" section of the TI website.
