LP2901: Input voltage

I am using the LP2901 quad comparator. There are some instances where the voltage on the V- input may reach 28V. This would not violate the 36V input maximum rating +/-36VDC differential voltage maximum rating. However, the VCC of my device is 9V. Will the comparator still function and output a low if this comparator momentarily hits 28V?

Hello Bradley,

Please see sections 2.2 and 2.5 of the LM339 family application note:

Application Design Guidelines for LM339, LM393, TL331 Family Comparators (Rev. A)

The LP2901 is in the same family, just with the supply current scaled-back, so the info still applies.

In short: It will not be damaged as long as you stay below 36V. And the output will still be correct as long as the other input is still within legal range (9V - 2V = 7V).
