TPA3255: TPA3255 amp with disconnected speaker for 1-2 seconds ... ?

Part Number: TPA3255

Hello,

Is it possible to power up TPA3255 amp with disconnected load for 1-2 seconds ( delay relay ... ) to prevent starting pops on speakers ??

Thank you in advance,

Emil

  • Emil,

This is an interesting idea and it might help prevent amp-bring-up pop but you could also add an additional pop. When the relay connects, both SPK+ and SPK- nodes should have charged to PVDD/2 (this is the amp-bring-up pop) but if the relay does not perfectly close for SPK+ and SPK- at the exact same time, the parasitic capacitance of the speaker to GND could cause an additional pop.

The other thing to be aware of is the massive amount of output current since the relay has to be in the output path. The RDSON of the relay could cause an issue with THD or the relay could heat to the point of failure.

Might still be worth a try on a prototype.
