TPA3116D2: THD+N performance @ 1SPW mode

Part Number: TPA3116D2
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TAS5805M

Hello Expert,

My customer observed that output THD performance degradation against BD modulation.
I think it is correct measurement result but I cannot make sure about the sanity of this result.
This is because, there isn't graph regarding THD+N vs PVDD, output power and frequency as like as BD mode.

Then, could you provide THD+N performance @1SPW mode as like as BD mode?

Also, Is there any material which explaining about BD modulation and 1SPW's feature and performance comparison?

Thank you and best regards,
Kazuki Kuramochi

  • Hi,

Datasheet couldn't cover all application data. It's suggested to measure desired data based on user case.

As for the BD and 1SPW comparison, you could refer TAS5805M datasheet figure for rough understanding.

    Regards

  • Hi Sorry for my late reply.

I summarized TAS5805M's BD and 1SPW mode THD+N performance as attached document.

I expected BD mode has better THD+N performance but datasheet's performance showed following result.

    1. BD mode has better performance than 1SPW mode under PVDD=19V, Pout=5W Fsw=384kHz
    2. But, under Fsw=768kHz, 1SPW mode has better performance than BD mode during especially 0.1W~5W and 200Hz ~ 5kHz.

So I'd like to confirm about the your expected performance difference between 1SPW and BD from the point of view of IC design side.
I think BD modulation have better performance under 384kHz but performance will be drop against 1SPW under 768kHz.
    Is this correct?
Also could we apply above trend to all of output power range and frequency range and all devices which have BD and 1SPW mode?
Moreover, could your provide explanation of why causing above trend?

    Thank you and best regards,

  • Hi expert,

Sorry for rushing you but is there somebody who is answering for my question?

    Best regards,

  • Hello Kazuki,

I will need to reach out to the validation engineer to provide some more insight on some of the performance variation for those specific conditions. As far as a better comparison for an analog input device, the TPA3138/TPA3139 has 1SPW/BD modulation performance data.

    Best regards,

    Luis

  • Hello Luis,

Is there any update regarding this?

    Also I checked TPA3138/3139's datasheet.
TAS3138 datasheet don't have audio performance data regarding 1SPW mode and TPA3139 only have 1SPW and BD mode performance data under Fsw around 320kHz.

So I must need the TPA3116's data which comparing 1SPW mode and BD mode. Also I need your opinion from the point of view of switching architecture.

    I'm waiting your feedback.

  • Hi,

There is no conclusion that BD mode THD+N performance is always better than 1SPW mode in all test conditions.

For your specific questions, first comparison at 12V, the LC filter is not the same. The second comparison 18V / 768kHz / 10uH BD and 1SPW mode, the reason why 1SPW has slight better is mostly related to thermal and ground bounce issue. Because 1SPW goes to single end switching after output power getting larger, the thermal performance is normally better than BD mode, which is differential switching.

Our suggestion is to measure customer application case (BD / 1SPW) based on our EVM board by yourself.
