LMH2180: Dual Clock Buffer with different Clock inputs

Hi

I'd like to buffer two separate clock signals, each of a few hundred kHz.  Would I be able to do this with a LMH2180?  In the typical application drawing it shows a single clock signal being fed into IN1 & IN2, which wouldn't meet my requirement.  Would I be able to feed one clock into IN1 and get it out of OUT1 and feed the other (separate) clock signal into IN2 and get it out of OUT2?

  • This may work for you. Keep in mind it is AC coupled (see page 13 for more info) and you'll need to size C1 appropriately.

    What sort of clock signals are you buffering? If they are LVCMOS or some other format, you may also consider a more formal clocking part. Some of these permit DC coupled inputs like CDCLVP2102 or CDCLVD2102; LMK01801 is a dual buffer with dividers and such.

  • Thanks for the info Timothy.  The clock frequencies (2 of them) will be no more than 400 kHz (probably half that), but nowhere near as fast as LVDS.  They're generated by a Microprocessor running at 3 V, so will be 3 V peak to peak.  I was thinking that I could use capacitive voltage dividers to limit the peak to peak to 2 V and provide the AC coupling requirement.

    My main query and worry was being able to use the inputs separately and independently (not tied together as shown on page 1) as I will be providing two separately generated xxx kHz clocks to separate parts of the circuit.
