ADC3643EVM: Interposer board schematic & layout

Part Number: ADC3643EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC3643, FMC-ADC-ADAPTER

Hello,

I am considering to user ADC3643EVM and connect it to a Xilinx FPGA evm board.  For that, I would use the interposer board included with ADC3643EVM.

I want to check the connection between the ADC3643EVM and the FPGA EVM, but I don`t find the schematic of the interposer board.

Could you please provide such schematic and also the layout?

Thanks,

  Miguel

  • Hi Miguel,

If you are planning to connect the ADC3643EVM to a Xilinx EVM, then you will not need the interposer board, and can connect the ADC3643EVM FMC directly to the Xilinx platform. This interposer board is used to connect to TI's TSW1400EVM FPGA data capture card (translates ADC3643 CMOS data to LVDS).

For your reference, please find the interposer board files below.

  • Hi Dan,

Thanks for your reply.  I didn't mention an important issue. The Xilinx EVM is KCU105, which has two FMC connectors, one FMC HPC and one FMC LPC.  In my case, the FMC HPC connector is already in use, so I need to connect the ADC3643EVM to FMC LPC.  That's why I was considering to use the interposer board, plus FMC-ADC_ADAPTER board.

Do you think this is possible?

    Regards,

      Miguel

  • Hi Miguel,

Looking at the KCU105 schematic for the LPC, it doesn't look like the pin columns E and F are not routed to any FPGA pins, so it will not be able to be natively connected directly to the ADC3643EVM (HPC connector will work).

The FMC-ADC-ADAPTER board will not work either as the E/F columns are not routed.

At the moment, it appears that there is not a straight forward solution to using the LPC for the ADC3643EVM, and may need to utilize the HPC or build an interposer for the LPC.

    Best Regards,

    Dan

  • Hi Dan,

As per FMC-ADC-ADAPTER schematic (SLOR101A.ZIP), E/F columns are not routed in FMC-ADC-ADAPTER.

It seems that FMC-ADC-ADAPTER board converts from ADC connector to FMC LPC. Am I wrong?

      Miguel

  • Hi Miguel,

Yes, you are correct that it is an ADC to FMC translator, but, as you mentioned, E/F are not included in the routing.

Also, the FMC-ADC-ADAPTER has both connectors on the bottom side of the PCB, do this would not work (mechanically) since the ADC3643EVM FMC is on the bottom of the PCB.

The ADC3643EVM User's Guide has pictures (page 4,5) of how the EVMs are connected to the TSW1400EVM via the interposer card.

    Best Regards,

    Dan

  • Hi Dan,

The fact that E/F are not included in the routing of FMC-ADC-ADAPTER is exactly what I wanted.

So, with the connection of ADC3643EVM + interposer card + FMC-ADC-ADAPTER, I would have all lines present at the ADC3643EVM connector (FMC HPC) translated to the FMC-ADC-ADAPTER connector (FMC LPC). And finally, I would connect the FMC-ADC-ADAPTER board to KCU105 FMC LPC connector.

I see this is a slightly twisted combination of boards, but I think it should work.

    Or am I missing something?

    Regards,

      Miguel

  • Hi Miguel,

I see now. Sorry, I was not considering that the ADC3643EVM interposer card would be used.

Yes, I think this will work (at least as far as pin mapping from the ADC3643EVM to Interposer to FMC-ADC-ADAPTER to LPC of KCU105), especially since we are shifting to LVDS so the parasitic capacitance of all the boards shouldn't be a big issue.

I also believe there should not be any issue with Male/Female connectors. In terms of the geometry of all the cards/PCBs fitting together without a catastrophic collision, I think this should also be ok, but you may want to double check that there is enough clearance for the KCU105 and no critical connectors are being blocked.

If you end up trying this, I would be very interested to know if it works well for you. Please let me know if there is any additional support that you may need.

    Best Regards,

    Dan

  • HiDan,

Yes, I will check that there is enough space for the connections of all boards.

If I finally try all this, I will let you know if it works.

Thansk a lot for your great support!!

    Regards,

      Miguel
