ADS8558: GUI Software requires administrator privileges to run

Part Number: ADS8558

Similair to the question asked a year ago for the ADS9244 SW, the latest download available for the ADS 8558EVM-PDK , SLYC145A-ADS8588SEVM-PDK Software (Rev. A) requires
administrator privileges to run the software.

As in our environment installation requiring administrator privileges is OK, requiring them for simply running the GUI afterwards is not doable.

Is there a version of the software available that runs without administrator privileges?

Best regards

   Stephan

  • Hello,

Our understanding is that the GUIs will require Administrator access during installation since there are writes being made to the program files directory.  However, our experience with the GUIs and that of some of other customers is that the GUIs shouldn't require administrator access after the initial installation.  The GUI should only be trying to make writes to public document folders after installation.  That said, these situations are dynamic and based on whatever else may be installed it's possible for conflicts.  Would you share a screen grab of the error message you receive when trying to run the GUI software?

  • Well,. the installed file has the "Admin Shield" shown in it:

Note that the file from the installation is quite old (December 2018), maybe there is a newer version available somewhere?

And when starting it it asks for rights to modify the files in the location:

  • Hello,

Thank you for the prompt reply.  As mentioned, the protection software our companies are installing results in some unexpected situations.  I reviewed the release dates and the version you have looks to be the correct version.  The GUIs released at this timing were interacting with some of the files in sometimes-restricted locations and this looks to be the case with the ADS8588EVM-PDK.

To come back to one of your original questions, we don't have a different version of this software which wouldn't have the same restrictions/requirements and the software is not currently planned for any updates or refreshes which could enable us to make some of the architecture changes required to fix this.  We understand the inconvenience this situation causes and we have taken feedback on these situations and have been more careful in recent GUI releases to be sure they run without administrator privileges after the initial installation.
