ADS130E08: ADS9817 can be used as alternative? Or any suggestions?

Hi Experts,

Seeking your guidance please:

Customer realized that as part of the realization of a test means requiring the measurement of 8 voltages he had identified the ADC ADS130E08 meeting the following criteria:

resolution > or = at 12 bits, 8 differential channels, I2C or SPI communication.

Unfortunately, their electronic team has modified certain aspects which have caused the maximum voltage to go from 3.5V to 4.5V, no longer allowing the use of this component to be possible. We are therefore looking for an alternative with similar characteristics that can accept a voltage of +/-5V and I am a little lost on all possible products (no search possible from Vin or in differential mode).

We came across the ADC ADS9817 that may meet their needs, could you tell us more about this component and others that may meet the requirements?

Thank you.

Regards,
Archie A.

  • Hi Archie,

The ADS130E08 and ADS9817 are two very different products. To help narrow down the selection, could you please elaborate further on the system requirements?

    1. Input range - you mention up to +/- 5 V. Is that single-ended, pseudo-differential, or fully-differential? Do you know the expected common-mode voltage of the input signal?
    2. Sampling rate - what is the desired sampling rate for the application? Or what is the signal bandwidth of interest?
    3. Is latency important? - this is one of several questions we often ask when deciding between SAR and delta-sigma ADC architecture. The SAR ADCs like the ADS9817 generally have less latency.

  • Hi Ryan,

Apology for the late response as the customer just got back in the office. Refer to the response below:

Concerning my needs (test tool), here is a small specification for an ADC :

    • SPI or I2C communication protocol
    • Resolution of 10 bits minimum
    • Supply voltage +5VDC
    • Range +/- 5V
    • Differential
    • Number of channels : ideally 8 but I can adjust if necessary (will depend on the size of the component)
    • ideally performs measurements in // (no multiplexing)
    • ideally max measurement time for 10 bit resolution : 100ms

At the beginning of the project the voltages to be measured were at most 3.8V and I had identified the ADS130E08 ADC which met my needs. Unfortunately our electronics team decided to review some points and the maximum voltage is now 5V. I have not found another component in your ADC range that meets my needs and is easy to use. I can't set up a reverse voltage system to use an ADC with a 0-5V input, it would disturb the measurement.

During my research I came across the ADS9817 which allows you to select several input voltage ranges but it is noted as a "preview" on your site.

    I have two questions:

    - Would you have one (or more) reference(s) that could meet my needs?
    - Is it possible to have an ADS9817 as a sample or purchase?
