ADS8866: Maximum Junction Temperature (or Case Temperature)

Part Number: ADS8866
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS8320

Hello I want to know about ADS8866 specification.

The ADS8866 datasheet lists only operating ambient temperature (free-air temperatrue (Ta))

I want to know the Junction Temperature (Tj) and Case Temperatre (Tc).

Other products specify that information.

Please let me know.

  • Hello Soyeong,

We only specify maximum ambient since there is very little difference between ambient, case, or junction temperatures due to the low internal power dissipation of the ADS8866.

For example, the maximum power dissipation of the ADS8866 is 1.2mW.  The junction-to-ambient thermal resistance is 151.9 C/W, so with an external ambient of 85C, the internal junction temperature will only be 85.2C.  As long as the external temperature, either ambient air or case temperature, does not exceed 85C, then the ADS8866 will be operating within the recommended temperature range.

  • Thank you for your reply.

I have one more question, Other ADC have Junction Temperature of 150℃ even though they are low-power (for example. ADC8320).

Is this case different from ADS8866?

For ADS8320, maximum power dissipation is 8.5mW and junction-to-ambient thermal resistance is 163.1 C/W.

(The calculated value (junction temperature) is 86.4℃.)

  • Hello Soyeong,

Unfortunately, we do not have any additional specifications other than provided in the datasheet.  However, the ADS8866 process and package are capable of supporting temperatures up to 125C.  The specified maximum temperature of 85C is the upper limit to ensure the ADS8866 meets all datasheet specifications and is fully functional.
