ADS131M08: ADS131M08 Single-Ended Input

Part Number: ADS131M08

Hello. I have an inquiry regarding ADS131M08.

I drew the circuit as shown in the photo below, but there is no part related to Single-End in the data sheet, so I would like to inquire whether if the circuit is implemented as above, it will be composed of Single-End 16Ch / Differential 8Ch.

The specifications the customer wants are in the range of Vref -1 to 1, so I think ASD131M08 would be perfect, but I don't understand the Single-End part well, so I'm asking for help.

  • Hi BEOMSU KIM,

The ADS131M08 always measures differentially between the AINxP and AINxN pins. See below for an example from the M08 datasheet showing how the default configuration for channel 3 is to measure between AIN3P and AIN3N.

Therefore, you cannot measure 16 single-ended signals with the ADS131M08. You can measure 8x differential signals or 8x single-ended inputs. For single-ended inputs, either AINxP and AINxN are connected to ground.

In your case, if you tried to measure the voltage on channel 3, you will measure the differential voltage between AIN3P and AIN3N, which in is AIN_EXT06 - AIN_EXT07 in your example

  • Thank you for your answer. Mr. Lizon.
I see. So, if I want to use Single-End / Differential at the same time, I need to use an IC with a Mux inside, such as ADS1258Series?
(Or, in the current circuit, attach a Mux Chip to all Ain-Negative Lines and switch them with Gnd.)

  • Hi BEOMSU KIM,

You can select differential or single-ended for each channel e.g. you can have 5x differential and 3x single-ended for example. So you can have any combination of SE and differential inputs, as long as the total number of inputs is 8x or less.

  • Thank you. The answer was very helpful.
