BP-ADS7128: Failed to connect to MSP432E401Y device #2

Part Number: BP-ADS7128
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS7128

Hello,

I have the same problem as reported in:

BP-ADS7128: Failed to connect to MSP432E401Y device - Data converters forum - Data converters - TI E2E support forums

I have already checked the following:

  • USB cable plugged in "Debug Port"
  • JP6 removed and put to JP1 middle position
  • Device manager shows:
    • XDS green LED is on, D1 is on, D3 is flashing

Everytime I try to execute "Program Device" the following screen appears:

The XDS110 LED is off and the device manager shows;

I tried this several times and with a 2nd launch pad with the same result.

Do you have any idea what can be wrong here?

Regards,

Ludwin

  • Hi Ludwin,

Welcome to the E2E forum!  Basically you are missing the driver association for the firmware update.  Follow the download instructions from the following post:

    https://e2e.ti.com/support/data-converters-group/data-converters/f/data-converters-forum/914940/faq-how-do-i-resolve-pamb-evm-connectivity-and-or-driver-installation-issues/3380582?tisearch=e2e-sitesearch&keymatch=pamb%252525252525252520driver#3380582

The PAMB is a condensed version of the LP.  You will need to manually associate the Tiva Device Firmware Update to the driver found in the directory in the post.  The correct driver to associate would be boot_usb.inf.  This should be the only driver that needs updating.  Once this association is made the firmware update should work for you.

  • Hi Bob,

    thanks for your support.

After installing the driver I was able to successfully flash one of my two boards. The 2nd board seems to start the download (red LED is flashing for short time) and then aborts.

With the successfully flashed board a changed the USB cable to the data port. Then the same happens as decribed here:

BP-ADS7128: BP-ADS7128: Hardware not connected - Data converters forum - Data converters - TI E2E support forums

The board is not recognized by the GUI: "Hardware not Connected. Please plug your Target Device into your Computer's USB port ..."

No COM Port is shown in the device manager when plugging in the USB cable to the data port, but the following:

    I have checked the following:

    • 3.3V voltage on the BP-ADS7128 board: present.
    • I tried to reset the board by pressing SW1: no success (only the TivaWare message in the device manager disappears and reappears again)
    • The 25MHz crystal oscillator is working

Thank you in advance for some hints to go further.

    Best regards

    Ludwin

  • Hi Ludwin,

If you are seeing the TivaWare Device Firmware Upgrade, then the board did not flash the program correctly and indicates an erased flash.  If the board flashed correctly, then you should see acctl devices under COM port drivers section.  The GUI is looking for the appropriate COM port to be able to connect to, but the program itself is not actually running as there is no program loaded.  Try flashing the board again.

    Best regards,

    Bob B

  • Hi Bob,

after some retrials I was able to correctly flash the board. The ACCtrl devices now appear in the device manager.

But I'm still not able to connect to the ADS7128 configuration tool. No Ports are found:

I tried to write the EEPROM with the EEPROM loader https://dev.ti.com/gallery/view/PADC/EEPROM_Loader/ver/1.4.1/ . With this tool a connection to the ACCtrl device works and EEPROM writing was successful.

    I tried a 2nd BP-ADS7128 board without success.

    Do you have any ideas?

    Best regards,

    Ludwin

  • Hi Ludwin,

Just so that I am clear, are we talking about the 2nd LP or a 2nd BP?  And if it is a 2nd BP, have you tried swapping the BP on the LP that you got working?

If we are talking about the 2nd LP, were you able to flash it so that the Acctrl shows up in Device Manager ports?

    Best regards,

    Bob B

  • Hi Bob,

I wasn't able to flash my 2nd LP.

I swapped the BP-ADS7128 on the working LP. Both BPs behave in the same way: EEPROM writing is possible, access via the ADS7128 tool is not.

    Thanks and best regards,

    Ludwin

  • Hi Ludwin,

If the EEPROM was properly programmed you should be able to connect.  From the Options-> Serial Port you should see something like the following:

If the screen is blank, try REFRESH.  If nothing is showing try pressing the RESET button up to then right of the USB debugger port.  If you see acctrl as an option, then the EEPROM didn't get properly loaded.  In any case let me know what you see here.

    Best regards,

    Bob B

  • Hi Bob,

Pressing "Refresh" or resetting doesn't helps. I always see the following message:

I tried to program the EEPROM. This seems to be successful:

But then it is still not possible to connect to the BP-ADS7128.

    Some further information:

    • Write protect jumper is only inserted during EEPROM writing and then removed.
    • ACCtrl (COM19) and ACCtrol Console (COM18) are visible in the device manager
    • monitoring the I2C-Signals shows no activity when trying to connect, Refresh or after pressing reset button.
    • I can see I2C traffic only during writing the EEPROM.

    Best regards

    Ludwin

  • Hi Ludwin,

This is all very strange and I'm sorry for all the issues you have had so far.  Just so that I'm clear, nothing is listed at all under Ports drop-down?  Also, when you wrote to the EEPROM, did you read it back to verify that what you wrote is being returned in the same way?

It may be possible that there is an issue with operating the GUI from the cloud.  Have you tried downloading the GUI and running from your computer instead of the cloud?  You can find the download as shown below:

First download and install the runtime engine, and then download and install the GUI.  Some people have had better success running locally than through the cloud due to security software issues preventing communication.

  • Hi Bob,

In the end I solved the serial port problem by using Firefox instead of MS Edge browser.

With Firefox I was able to connect to the BP-ADS7128.

When starting with the tools I used Firefox at the beginning and then switched to Edge after facing the problems discussed above.

Interesting: the EEPROM writing tool runs with Edge, the ADS7128 tool does not.

    Thank you for your support.

    Best regards,

    Ludwin

  • Hi Ludwin,

Not all browsers are created equal, and I apologize that I did not ask you about the browser that you were using.  Most of the development has been done in Chrome, but should also work with other browsers.  As this is an older project it is quite possible that browser updates can cause issues.  So I'm glad to hear that you were able to finally communicate.  Thanks for sharing the information and in the future hopefully others can avoid your struggles.

    Best regards,

    Bob B
