ADS1278EVM-PDK: MMB0 debugger

Part Number: ADS1278EVM-PDK
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADCPRO, ADS1278

Keith:

Thank you very much for your help for resolving my issue with the ADCPro and the MMB0's driver for Windows 7.

Could you please tell me where I can buy the debugger of MMB0 so that I can develop an ADS1278-based data-acquisition system on the platform of MMB0?

I will be able to write the code to set the sampling rate of ADS1278 and then read data from ADS1278 under the control of MMB0, if I have such a debugger, I hope that MMB0'd debugger would be able to work with Windows 10.

Regards,

Wenquan

  • Hi Wenquan,

I will respond for Keith. The MMB0 board is not a development platform. You cannot develop and debug applications with the MMB0. TI will not support any attempt to use the MMB0 for development. It is not designed to write your own code and applications.

The MMB0 is only to be used with ADCPro to evaluate devices as a part of the EVM platform.

    Best regards,

Thank you very much for the answer.

Since MMB0 is able to control ADS1278EVM for setting the sampling rate and reading data, it certainly could be used as a development platform for sure if TI were willing to release MMB0's firmware/hardware to the public as open source. IBM released its personal computer design to the public as open source, as a results, PCs are now being used everywhere. Since TI doesn't like its ADS1278 to be used everywhere, it has to keep its MMB0 as a secret.

In fact, a simple control system like MMB0 contains absolutely no secret at all if you are a DAC system developer. For the sake of not wasting time to reinvent the wheels, a DAC system developer tends to copy a simple system design that is open to the public, and then modify it for his/her own use. Since TI keeps MMB0 as a secret, I have to design such a simple system myself, reinventing the wheel :).

  • Hi Wenquan,

I appreciate your input and perspective.  The MMB0 (Modular MotherBoard) design is almost 15 years old.  The code tools we used initially are not around anymore.  The original development was done on Win98.  For TI to maintain code and tools for a platform that would not be used by a real application is not practical and requires a lot of resources (mostly people) to support.  It is not a matter of secrecy, but rather resource availability.  We just can't support an endeavor to use the MMB0 as a development platform.  That was not it's purpose.  One major concern with the MMB0 is that it cannot stream data which prevents it from being a useful end platform.  TI has other resources available that can support development with a system of support, tools and debug capability.  Many of these tools are open source.  Check out:
