ADS54J54EVM: LMK's is not locking

Part Number: ADS54J54EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADS54J54

Hi,

We just received a ADS54J54EVM (PCB REV C). I connected the 5V supply and USB and ran the GUI. Then I downloaded the “ADS54J54_500M_442.cfg” configuration file (actually went through all the steps in the EVM’s user guide and GUI does have connection to the EVM). None on the 4 LEDs connected to LMK is illuminated and all the LMK outputs seem to be silent. Is it supposed to work without any other modifications to the register than is done by the config file? Do I have to change any of the configuration jumpers or anything like that? What is the default clock configuration according to the config file I mean PLL1 locks to what and PLL2 locks to what (MUX positions, enables etc)?

Regards/Ramin

PS. I just checked Y2 (100MHz VCXO) and its completely dead, even though Jumper J6 is on. Any advise?

  • Ramin,

The board should operate after just downloading the mentioned config file. What is you 5V current limit set to? This should be at least 3A. Is the 5VIN LED D10 turning on? Are the power test points reading the correct voltage levels? The GUI must have the USB Status green light turned on for this to work. Can you read back the registers from both the LMK and ADC devices? PLL1 should lock to the on-board 10MHz oscillator and PLL2 should lock to the Y2 (100MHZ osc).

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

Thanks for quick reply. I checked voltages and all of them are fine. Also the GUI has connection with the EVM and read back works as expected. As I added to my first posting, Y2 seems to be the culprit. The power jumper (JP6) is on so its getting its 3.3V supply (been checked) but nothing is coming out of it. The part om my EVM has 4 terminals (as opposed to the schematics that has 6) but that should not be the problem, Crystec has both variant and they are interchangeable, I suppose. What can be done you think?

    Regards/Ramin

  • Ramin,

Make sure Y2 is installed properly (see attached photo) and the four corner pins are all soldered properly. You may want to re-solder these if it looks like it may be an issue. If you cannot get an output from the oscillator you can send us the board to get repaired or apply for a replacement. I can also send you another oscillator if you would like to try swapping it out.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Hi Jim,

It seems to be some thing wrong with Y2. I re-solder it and now it works intermittently, A light touch on it (or any where on the board) makes it work or stop working so something is lose inside (the soldering is 100% verified). I ordered the part from Digikey and should have it tomorrow. I let you know.

    Regards/Ramin

  • Jim,

The part change did the trick. And it was not the soldering but the part itself that was faulty. Anyway the board is now stable and capture is to working at least with ADS54J54_500M_442.cfg loaded. But I can not get my set up to work properly when I use ADS54J54_500M_881.cfg  config file. I started digging and found a few possible problems with the settings in the files. Do you have an updated version of this file? I need 500MSP output data rate on 8 lanes without decimation.

    Regards/Ramin

  • Ramin,

881 mode does not exist. Please use the ADS54J54_500M_841.cfg config file. There is an ini file for this already (ADS54J54_LMF_841). I just tested this with no problems. What version of HSDC Pro are you using?

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Jim,

I meant 841 of course. When I load ADS54J54_500M_841.cfg and look at resulting settings in the EVM GUI, the decimation filters are still enabled. Also the lanes settings are wrong too, 4 lanes instead of 8. On the HSDC window I can see that D0-D6 are dead too so the wave forms are all gibberish. I use HSDS VER5.0 and select ADS54J54_LMF_841. Could you send me your version of ADS54J54_500M_841.cfg?

    Regards

    Ramin

  • Ramin,

In the ADC GUI, the decimation filters are enabled by default. You must turn these off before doing a capture.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Isn't it so that the GUI just reflects what ever register values that is loaded with the config file? By the way I've tried earlier to disable the decimation manually too but that's not helping, the lane settings are still wrong. I am at home an do not have access to my boards right now so I cannot try anything until tomorrow but please do send me your config file that works for you.

    Regards

    Ramin

  • ADS54J54_500MHz_841.pptxRamin,

Please follow the attached document. What version of HSDC pro are you using?

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Jim,

I did exactly as you described but it did not work. I then looked at L and F settings and they were wrong (L =2 F=2) . I changed those to L=4 and F=1 and it still did not worked. Then I started from the beginning and loaded “ADS54J54_500M_442.cfg” instead and did the changed on decimation, L and F registers afterward. It started working right away! My conclusion is that the version of “ADS54J54_500M_841.cfg” which is bundled with ADS54J54EVM GUI is hopelessly flawed. My question is now this: Is there anything else that I might be missing when I start with 442 conig file? I would be much more comfortable if I had your version of 841, Please do send that to me.

By the way I run HSDC VER5.0

  • 2806.ADS54J54_500M_841.cfgRamin,

The config file I used is attached.

    Regards,

    Jim

  • Thanks. That was it! It worked nicely without any manual changes required. And its nothing like the original 841 file so you might want to update the GUI bundle to avoid this in the future.
