[FAQ] ADS124S08: How do I measure temperature using an RTD?

Part Number: ADS124S08
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: ADC-TEMP-SENSOR-FW,

I want to make a temperature measurement using an RTD connected to an ADC.  There 2-wire, 3-wire and 4-wire RTDs, can you explain the differences?  Do you have information on how to make this type of measurement?  And do you have any example code on how to convert the RTD resistance to a temperature?

  • The best place to begin is to look at A Basic Guide to RTD Measurements. This is a useful guide explaining how an RTD works and the differences between the different wire types. There is also useful information on connecting the RTD to an ADC and the calculations needed to convert the RTD resistance to a temperature.

Additional circuit examples can be found in the Analog Engineers Circuit Cookbook.

There is also an additional resource available that reduces the 'C' code effort. The API applies specifically to the ADS124S08, but the code and examples can also be used for other ADCs with some additional modification. This API tool is ADC-TEMP-SENSOR-FW, and can be installed on Windows or Mac.
