DLPC7540EVM: non functional device no debug over serial even after re programming the brd and bootloader files

Part Number: DLPC7540EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLP471TEEVM, , DLPDLC-GUI

Tool/software:

I recently received this device and it is not recognized by the computer after setting up per the manual.

We tried with different USB cables, changing jumper from J67 position back to J9 position to start in boot-mode. No matter the jumper position (J67 or J9) LEDs D5, D6, D7 and D15 stays powered ON (D15 does not blink when jumper is on J67). Device is not responsive and can not be detected by PC/GUI.

There is also no data sent out over the serial port (J102).

I have tried reprogramming the bootloader following this link https://e2e.ti.com/support/dlp-products-group/dlp/f/dlp-products-forum/1175334/dlpc7540evm-install-firmware-without-usb-connection

the JTAG programmer detects the board correctly and writes the files

Do you have any suggestions how to troubleshoot the device?
Is there any additional information available, how to identify where the problem is coming from (DLPC7540EVM board or DLP471TEEVM)?

  • Hello Aaron,

Welcome to the E2E forum and thank you for your interest in DLP® technology.

Do you have the DMD board connect to the DLPC7540EVM? What's the DMD board you are using?

When you first time received the DLPC7540EVM and the DMD EVM, were you able to communicate with GUI?

In general by default, the EVM already has the bootloader, the user should be able to power up the EVM by only programming the .img file for it proper DMD.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • I have the DLP471TEEVM attached to the DLPC7540EVM connected to J7 and J10 as described in the manual.   I have never been able to see the boards in the GUI, the usb connection never shows up.

  • Hello Aaron,

What's the GUI version you are using? Do you use DLPDLC-GUI and selected DLPC7540EVM? When you connect with the USB, what's the EVM status shown in the GUI?

When you finished re-programed bootloader, did it confirm program finish and successful?

    Regards,

    Lori

  • I downloaded the DLPDLC-GUI from the DLPC7540EVM page.  it is version 3.2.0.7.  I selected the DLPC7540EVM and no board shows up when it is connected to usb.  It says "EVM Status: Not Connected"  This has always been the case since I received the board.  The board never shows up on the debug tab of the GUI to be able to connect.  The bootloader did program and finish successfully, but there is no change in the behavior in the GUI.

  • Hello Aaron,

Can you please share the screenshot of the debug tab of the GUI to make sure you have USB interface is selected?

Can you please probe pin 1 of the micro-USB connector (J2)? This might be indicative of lost of communication through USB based on voltage level.

Can you also make sure if you can have the debug log by using a RS232-to-USB cable connect with J102? The debug log is sent through serial port using a baud of 115200. I would recommend using the TeraTerm application but many are available.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Pin 1of the USB shows 4.97V

I have tried to get debug output with multiple computer, cables, terminal programs adapters and direct to serial on a PXI crate.    I am unable to get any output from the board.

  • Hello,

It seems that a driver is missing. The GUI needs a driver to be connected.

Please double check device manager to see if the USB is recognized. You may want to try to uninstall and reinstall the GUI.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Lori,

Thank you for the suggestion, but that didn't work either.  The computer doesn't recognize a USB cable being plugged in.  I tried multiple cables as well, but still no change.

    Thanks

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

This is the issue if your computer cannot recognize the USB connection and it might not something I can help with the DLP EVM.

I'd recommend trying a second USB port or using another composer and download the GUI if these have not done yet.

Please let us know if you have any other questions after you can figure out the USB issue.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Lori,

I have tried multiple computers and cables, both USB and serial.  I am unable to get it to recognize the USB is plugged in , and still cant any debug output over J102.  I've contacted Digikey to try and get the boards RMA'd but they wont approve that until we've gone through everything you can help with and verify it doesnt seem right.

    Thanks

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

Thank you for trying using different computers and cables.

Can you please share a screenshot of the GUI download directory folder? I would like to compare the files.

Also, can you please try to see if you can read/write commands in the GUI even it shows the EVM is not connected?

After you checking the above steps, we can go next step to confirm if you can start RMA.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • i think this is the directory listing you wanted..

I cant get any commands sent through the gui either.

    Aaron

  • Hi Aaron,

Thank you for confirming! Do you also install or checked the cypress driver download box when installing the GUI?

If yes, then I need to investigate more to see if we have other solution for you.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • Yes The drivers were installed.  I'm sure the unit was just DOA, I just need confirmation so Digikey will RMA it

  • Hi Aaron,

When did you bought the EVM, the EVM has 90 days warranty. It's very like because of the controller DLPC7540EVM.

    Regards,

    Lori

  • We bought both of them on 2/24/25.  how would I go about getting them replaced under warranty?

    Aaron

  • Please reach out to your local distributor  where you purchased the EVM from. I think you purchased from Digikey.
This thread can be used as proof of RMA authorization.

    Regards,

    Lori
