Need help choosing developer kit for sensing application

Hi,

I'm trying to use the DMD for a sensing application. The developer kits on the website seem like they are meant for projection. 

Can any of the kits be converted with some work to just be a developer kit for the DMD itself? Basically I just want something that will give me a programmable DMD that I can use in a system where I provide the incoming light source and I handle the receiving end of the reflected light.

I saw a post about someone modifying the Light Commander to do this. Can the cheaper kits (like the Pico V2) be converted to do the same? 

Any help would be appreciated.
