LightCrafter projector not detected by OS

Hi,

Question: My DLP LightCrafter is not being detected by the OS.  Is there a possible software fix?

I have two DLP LightCrafters.  The problem only occurs with one of the projectors; there are no problems with the other projector.  Operating systems (Snow Leopard, Windows 7, and Windows XP) don't detect the projector when the projector is connected to the machine.  Also, swapping cables with the working projector did not help.

The following may also be useful for diagnosing my problem.  I have a Matrox DualHead2Go DP edition (http://www.matrox.com/graphics/en/products/gxm/dh2go/), a device for splitting one monitor output into two (the device acts as a 1600x600 resolution display, splitting the input received by the computer into two 800x600 digital signals).  The Matrox device first sends its own EDID to the computer (containing the resolutions supported by the Matrox device).  I believe the Matrox device ignores any EDID information from the monitor/projector.  Next, the computer provides the Matrox device with the display input, the Matrox device splits it into two digital signals, and the signal is forwarded to the connected displays.  When I connect the LightCrafter projector to the Matrox device, the projector works fine (at 800x600 resolution).  I suspect this approach works because any EDID handshake between the Matrox device and the LightCrafter is ignored anyways.

In short, I suspect the LightCrafter projector is not sending the computer its EDID and is therefore not being detected by the computer.  Any suggestions for resolving this issue?  I noticed the DLPLightCrafterGUI has an option for installing SW packages to the projector, including the projector's EDID.

Thanks.  Hope I provided sufficient detail.

Matt

  • Hi Matt,

I have two questions to ask,

    1. Did you try connecting the LightCrafter by running the GUI?

    2. If so, did you check the RNDIS connection (System Properties-> Hardware-> Device Manager-> Network Adapters)?

The connectivity issue of the LightCrafter is acknowledged and we are working on it. Also, please check link and link for discussions and workaround.

    Best Regards,

  • Sorry, I realize my previous post wasn't entirely clear.  The OS detects the device through USB just fine.  The OS doesn't detect the device through the HDMI connection.

I have no problems connecting to the LightCrafter using the GUI.  I'm also able to control the unit without any problems through the GUI.  The issue with my LightCrafter unit is with the video (HDMI); not the USB connection.

The device appears as "USB Ethernet/RNDIS Gadget" under Network Adapters.

When the LightCrafter is connected through HDMI to a computer, I expect the projector to appear in my list of displays (in Windows 7, one can check the connected displays by right clicking "Desktop", and selecting "Screen Resolution") and display the computer's content.  When the working LightCrafter is plugged in, I see a display called "IND PICO DVI" at 608x684 resolution and displays HDMI content just fine.  However, when I connect my "broken" LightCrafter, the computer does not see the display and nothing gets displayed by the projector (it's as though the LightCrafter unit were not connected to the computer through HDMI at all).  This problem consistently occurs for the one LightCrafter unit on any machine and OS.

Also, there's another workaround to resolve this problem (other than the Matrox solution).  When working in Windows and with an NVIDIA card, it's possible to force digital output by setting a registry key to always detect a monitor (as described in http://obscure-tech-tips.blogspot.com/2010/01/forcing-your-nvidia-card-to-send.html).  When the LightCrafter is connected to the graphics card through HDMI, the projector displays the HDMI content.  However, without setting the registry key, the projector displays nothing.  This is still not the ideal fix though.

  • Hi matt,

Thanks for helping me understand the problem and for posting the workarounds. I have to look into this more closely before suggesting a fix.

I will get back to you on Monday.

  • Hi Matt,

I was unable to duplicate this set-up since the LightCrafter I have seems to be working fine. Please allow a couple of days more for the response.

  • Matthew,

Sounds like the EDID is not being sent through HDMI. Try reinstalling the EDID from the DLP3000-C300REFEDID by using the GUI in the Solutions / Upgrade tab. Under the SW Package (right side of the screen), select EDID, and browse to find this downloaded file, then click reinstall. Power down the board and power it back up. Reconnect the HDMI cable and test to see if an image is displayed.

  • Fantastic!  Problem solved.  Thank you.

  • Worked well for me too without it, the display used to turn red

    Thanks!
