Unable to upload firmware, getting error "Unable to read flash manufacturer ID"

Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DLPC350

I am using the DLPLCR4500GUI-3.0.1 GUI software. I am unable to upload firmware to the LightCrafter 4500, I get the error "Unable to read flash manufacturer ID."

I tried the following methods to troubleshoot:

  • Reinstall the GUI software, downloading a new flash image, etc...
  • Ensuring "FlashDeviceParameters.txt" file exists in the same directory as the EXE
    • This did NOT fix the issue
  • Installing the GUI software on another PC
    • This did work, however only for a limited time. The error restarted to occur again, and now it requires me to reinstall the GUI software on a third PC. I am running out back PCs. This temporary solution is NOT sustainable.

After reading a similar post, it seems this error is independent of the PC used. It is more of an issue related to the GUI software.

This issue has been ongoing for me for several months. The temporary solution is not sustainable. TI can you please fix this issue ASAP.

  • Hi,

    • I followed the Windows installer link for the GUI SW and it worked for me. Could you describe the issue with the GUI SW download page?
    • I read through Adam's post and it looks like he concluded his issue was with his PC motherboard drivers

I also noticed that Adam was using Windows 8. Is this the same version of Windows that is on all of the machines you have tried with the GUI?

    Thanks,

    Clinton

  • I am using Windows 10. Adam managed to fix the issue by reinstall the USB/motherboard drivers. However, note how he mentioned that the problem arised for him again later on. Unfortunately this method is not a feasible solution for me. When I tried to uninstall/reinstall USB/motherboard driver, I ended making the problem worse.

I ended up resolving the GUI SW download issue. Every time I clicked on the download link, it would take me to TI's "Document not Found" page. I resolved this by opening the link in another browser with cache and cookies cleared.

  • Hello everyone,

I am actually experiencing the same issue. I can not upload any firmware via the GUI into the lightcrafter as it blocks and then the message 'unable to read flash manufacturer ID' pops up. I succeeded 3 days go to upload a firmware, but right after this message started to pop out for the first time and is still popping right now.

I reviewed all the topics of the forum related to this specific error but none of the solution worked. I especially updated all my USB drivers via the last chipset update proposed by the seller of my motherboard. I also updated my BIOS version and other stuff related to the motherboard but the message is still popping. I hope that TI support will be able to propose us some solution.

  • Hi David,

What OS are you using? We've tested on XP and Windows 7 and haven't had any issues with this particular error. We haven't tested on Windows 10, so it's possible there is an issue with that OS.

  • Hi Paul,

The OS used is windows 10. I got the issue fixed though. I tried to upload a firmware for the n time and I saw that after failing to upload, the green led was not flashing anymore and that the device detected by windows was no longer DLP3500 but something like DDP444X. I choose to suppress this DDP444X device (which is equivalent to uninstalling the driver for it). I unplugged the DLP lighcrafter both from source and from USB and replug the source and the USB. WIndows 10 thus automatically reinstalled the driver as I suppressed it and I was again able to upload a firmware by thg GUI.

I guess there is some issue with this DDP444X on windows 10, maybe it is worth to look at it.

  • David,

Glad you got if figured out. We'll take note of the issues on Windows 10, thanks for bringing it to our attention.

  • David,

Can you please clarify how to uninstall the driver from Windows 10? When I go to Device Manager, I do NOT see DLP3500 nor DDP444X. Under which category is the device listed?

  • Dear Aftab,

What is precisely your issue ? Mine concerned uploading a new firmware in the DLP Lightcrafter 4500 using the Graphical User Interface provided by TI. My goal was to add a new image in the flash memory of the DLP by just following the steps in the User Guide. One of these steps implied downloading a new changed firmware on the DLP 4500 thanks to the upload firmware button on the TI GUI software.

Unfortunately, each time I used this button, browse to the firmware file select it and run the upload process, right in the middle it froze saying impossible to read manufacturer ID. Then you see the DLP was in a strange state, it was on (the power alimentation was on), but it had no more firmware and so the green light above was not flashing anymore. This is because the upload process had successfully suppressed the old firmware but could not install the new due to the ID error.

A strange point I remarked is that when the DLP was in this strange state with no firmware, there was a strange device detected in Device Manager called something like DDP444X (do not remember exactly) instead of having the usual detection of DLPC350 when the DLP Lightcrafter was running without error. So what I did is just that I suppressed this strange DDP444X unplug the Lightcrafterand replugged it and then I had no more problem with this manufacturer ID.

    Regards,

    David

  • Maybe it is not in Device Manager but in something like Connected Devices. I do no know the perfect engilsh translation for this section on an english windows 10 version. You will have to fumble a bit into the Devices management stuff on windows.
  • Hi,

A bit late, but we have fixed it and would like to share it to the community.
