I am building a microscope incorporating the DLP4500 DMD to structure the image. The light source is a 5 mW 405 nm laser diode. The image from the microscope is focused onto the DMD and the on state is collected by a detector. I see that most TI documentation states to illuminate the DMD at 24 degrees incident angle. My concern is that the phase fronts of the image will become distorted by this oblique reflection. I have seen other designs use a DMD at normal incidence. Is there any concern with using the flat state (normal to the DMD) as the illumination direction?

If the illumination is at normal to DLP4500 DMD then it results in 12 degree separation between illumination and on pupil. This will require the ON pupil collection optics to less than 6 degree cone. You should be OK as long as you a slower optics with collection angle of less than 6 degree i.e F/5. There may be lower efficiency at such low F number.
