TPS65987D: PP_HV1 & PP_HV2 Inputs connected to the fixed 15V power supply

Hi,

Our customer is using the TPS65987DDHRSHR in a device that has a USB-C output that will be used to provide power to a display. He wants to power that display using 15V over the USB-C cable. Is it possible to have both PP_HV1 and PP_HV2 inputs of the TPS65987 connected to the fixed 15V power supply? If so, how would we set that up correctly in the TPS6598x configuration tool? Hello Ray,

In order to be compliant with the USB-IF Type-C PD spec, your customer must support 5V, 9V, and 15V sourcing options if they are wanting to source 15V. At the very least they will need to offer 5V and 15V sourcing capabilities as a Type-C PD device will first negotiate a 5V contract before transitioning to a 15V contract.

Hello Adam,

Thanks for the reply. Can't the 5V VBUS be supplied from the PP_CABLE pin of the TPS65987?

Also, while using the TPS6598x configuration tool, I see that in the "Transmit Source Capabilities" section, the "Source PDO 1" is fixed at 5V. Is this because the TPS65987 needs to be able to supply at least 5V to be compliant with USB-C PD specs?

Hi Philippe,

Unfortunately no, PP_CABLE only supplies 5V to the CC pins for VCON. It does not supply 5V to VBUS. You will need to place 5V on one of the PPHV pins for it to be supplied to VBUS

Yes, a USB Type-C source must be able tp supply 5V
