DP83848VYB: Is it okay to left the thermal pad floating?

Part Number: DP83848VYB
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83848I,

Hi,

Good day.

Our customer would like to know if they can leave the thermal pad of DP83848VYB floating? They are using the DP83848I on their original design but since they have problem sourcing the DP83848I, they want to use the DP83848VYB as an alternate. There is no way they can solder the pad on PCB. Thus, they want to know if there will be no problem if they leave it floating.

Looking forward to your input. Thank you.

Regards,
Cedrick

  • Hi Cedrick,

Let me consult with my team on this issue. I can respond back by Friday at the latest. If there are any delays, I will let you know. Thank you for your patience.

  • Hi Cedrick,

The DP83848I is rated to 85degC, while the DP83848VYB is rated to 105degC. The ground pad is on the DP83848VYB is used like a heat sink for the extended temperature grade. As long as your application stays within the temperature rating of the DP83848I, then leaving the thermal pad of the DP83848VYB floating should be fine. In addition, from a schematic standpoint, there are other pins for grounding, so the thermal pad should not be necessary for grounding.
