if I understand the data sheet correctly either VCCA >= VCCB or VCCB >= VCCA.

Can you confirm this, please?

Section 10 says:

The TCA9416 has no supply restrictions outside of the 1.08 V to 3.6 V range. V_CCA can be higher than or lower than V_CCB. The internal circuitry will select the appropriate supply automatically to correctly support translation. V_CCA can also be the same as V_CCB, and the device can be used as a buffer.
