DP83822I: substitute DP83848M for use in TMDSCNCD28388D

Hi,

I am leveraging the design of the TMDSCNCD28388D but noticed that DP83822i has a very long lead time. I started to look at DP83848M as an alternate. Would the DP83848M work properly if i substitute it in? Will any firmware need to be changed to operate with either of these PHYs because some of the "extended" registers are different or the interrupt pin is missing (or any other reasons)?

Hi Jose,

The DP83848M could in theory work as an alternative part, but the design would need to be built for the 848 instead of the 822. The packages are different though with the 822I having 32 pins and 848M with 40 pins. Depending on what features from the 822I you were planning on using that would give the information necessary to let you know if the 848M could also support those features. And, yes the devices have different registers, so depending on which modes are planned for, the firmware might require adjustments.

Hi Lysny,

This would be for an EtherCAT application and understand the package would be different. From checking with the C2000 team it seems like the SW stack should be PHY agnostic from their feedback. For an EtherCAT application would there be any concerns from an overall functionality perspective?

There should be no issues with EtherCAT with the DP83848.
