TPD1E05U06: Use ESD diode with power rails

I see some words in datasheet from other vendor, such as GESDPSA0402V05 (steifpower.com), it states:

Caution: This component is designed for signal line protection only, Not intended to be used under bias, not for application with a power line.

So, I wonder if TI has same limitation with its ESD diodes, particularly TPD1E05U06, 'cause I'm planning to use it for power rail ESD protection.

BTW, please explain why some vendor's product can't be used with power rail, if you can :).

Hello,

To protect a power line, I would recommend using a surge protection device (TVS), not an ESD device. According to the IEC 61000-4-5 standard, surge events are much longer than ESD events (8/20 us vs 10/100 ns), and the devices that protect against them need to be able to withstand the current generated. Devices that are primarily ESD suppressors are rated to withstand higher transient voltages(IEC 61000-4-2), but not as much current. The Steifpower device you linked doesn't even have this spec'd, hence why they don't recommend using it on a power line. You can read more about surge protection and TVS diodes in the papers below:

For a 5 V power rail that doesn't go below 0 V, I would recommend the TVS0500. It is a 5 V Vrwm device rated to withstand 43 A of an IEC 61000-4-5 surge pulse.

Yes, an ESD diode may not handle the power of a long surge event. Actually, I'm considering the ESD protection of HDMI connector. You know, there is one 5V pin. If only considering the ESD event, is it OK to use TPD1E05U06? Or just leave that pin without any protection diode, just decouple capacitor is OK?

Yes TPD1E05U06 would work for the 5 V HDMI pin. I would definitely recommend using a diode over just a decoupling capacitor.
