TVS1400: protecting SN65HVD230D

Part Number: TVS1400
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: SN65HVD230

Hello,

Would the TVS1400 protection device be a good fit to protect a SN65HVD230D working at 1Mbaud ?

Breakdown and clamping voltages seem to be adequate.

I need the SN65HVD230 protected up to at least ±15kV following IEC 61000-4-2.

Thank you.

Regards,

Victor Tolosana

  • Hi Victor,

I would not recommend TVS1400 for this application. It is mainly a surge protection device and not meant for data signals with fast rise times. It has a a slew rate limitation in which if the slew rate increases past 2.5 V/us, the device will start leaking a significant amount of current.

Unfortunately we currently do not have any ESD devices for CAN. However, we are in the process of developing one.

  • Hello Matt,

Thank you for the detailed explanation.

Do you have another TVS device capable of protecting the SN65HVD230 lines @1Mbaud ?

Even if it is not made for CAN and/or we have to use one on each CAN signal.

    Thank you very much.

  • Hello Victor,

Unfortunately we do not. SN65HVD230's CANH and CANL lines can be subject to bus faults up to 16 V, which we do not have a part for at this time.

    Matt
