DP83869HM: Usage of SGMII interface at media/line side to connect to SFP modules

Part Number: DP83869HM

Hi All,

With DP83869HMRGZT,

Can "SGMII pinouts" be used on media/line side to connect to SFP modules that support 1000BASE-X,100BASE-FX and SGMII?

The above feature is supported in M/s Marvell part: 88E1512 and the same is exclusively mentioned in datasheet as well.

Referring to datasheet of DP83869HM (SNLS614A–SEPTEMBER2018–REVISEDDECEMBER2018),

There is no direct mentioning of SGMII usage over SFP (media side), whereas

1. It mentions "RGMII to SGMII bridge mode"  with ETHERNET PHY on SGMII side (But not SFP)

These are at Page No. 03 as well as Page No. 36

2. Even the Para 10.2.2  (FiberEthernetTypicalEthernet, at Page No. 108) does not mention SGMII interface over SFP

The intention is to run traffic from RGMII (MAC Side in FPGA./processor) to SGMII (Media Side) over SFP using DP83869HMRGZT as PHY.

Kindly clarify at the earliest

Reg,

  • Hi Reg,

In the features section on the first page of the datasheet, it states that the device is 1000Base-X, 100Base-FX compatible with SFP MSA specifications. Since the fiber pins are multiplexed with the SGMII pins (i.e. media side fiber pins are the same as SGMII pins), the SFP module can be used for SGMII as well.
