NS16C2552: Difference between NS16C2552 and PC16552

Part Number: NS16C2552
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TL16C2552,

Dear Specialists,

My customer is considering TL16C2552 instead of PC16552 and has questions.

I would be grateful if you could advise.

---

(1) Could you please let me know the difference between NS16C2552 and PC16552,

regarding electrical specification, timing, resister map and etc.

(2) Is it possible to change without software changes.

(3) Could you provide resister setting difference.

---

I appreciate your great help in advance.

Best regards,

Shinichi

  • Hey Shinichi,

TL version has wider Vcc acceptable range (1.8V to 5V)

NS version uses TTL thresholds, TL version uses 30-70 definitions for thresholds

NS sets Clock max to 24MHz while TL sets 20MHz for 3.3V and 24MHz for 5V

NS AC timing has lower limits; all AC parameters seem to have shifted/differ.

For RESET default states, it seems MCR3 remains set for the TL while NS is cleared.

SCR in NS all bits set.

Register selection/access appears to be similar based on table 1 for both devices.

"(2) Is it possible to change without software changes."

The quickest way for us to know would be for the customer to order a sample and see if the TL version works without changes in software. Unfortunately these are legacy devices and knowledge between actual silicon/design differences are not known since the NS version was created by national semi and the TL version was made over almost 2 decades ago with the original designers no longer at the company.

I think if we were to try to support the customer moving from the NS to the TL, we would need to work together to debug the issue if they run into anything.

  • Hi Bobby,

    Thank you for your reply.

    I'd like to confirm.
Does TL version stand for PC16552?
    Does NS version represent NS16C2552?

    I'm sorry for my typo.

Customers want to know the difference between NS16C2552 and PC16552.

If not, could you please confirm again?

I appreciate your great help and cooperation.

    Best regards,

    Shinichi

  • Hi Shinichi,

Your original post referenced TL16C2552. I thought you had wanted the comparison between TL16C2552 and NS16C2552. I guess I misread your post.

I'll try to generate another comparison for you tomorrow. Sorry for the delay.

  • Hi Bobby,

    I'm sorry for confusing you.

I made the difference made by the datasheet and sent the customer.

    NS16C2552 vs. PC16552.xlsx

Despite the simple table, they understood..

So let's close this thread. Thank you for your patience.

Then they compared the registers of NS16C2552 and PC16552 and found the difference.
    So I created another thread.
Could you please respond that thread.
