TPS65988: Can I use PD function with only CC pin?

Part Number: TPS65988
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987

Hello TI experts,

My customer considers TPS65988 for their new product, they have some questions for this IC.

firstly I would show you a simplified diagram.

the black dotted box is the product what they want to make.

and the red dotted box is tablet PC (like Samsung galaxy tab) - they will insert tablet PC itself into their product.

and we both know that there are many pins in USB type C female connector on this tablet PC.

they want to connect separately the PD adapter and USB2.0 HUB IC.

1. using only D+, D-, GND, and +5V (generated from step down converter) => connect to USB 2.0 HUB

2. using only CC1, CC2, and VBUS => connect to PD wall charger, through TPS65988

i want to know my concept is right, or have something to change.

one more question, what are essential pins for PD? is there any other pins including CC1, CC2 and VBUS?

please check this issue, and let me know if you have more information for this.

Best regards,

Chase

  • Hi Chase,

So the system needs the legacy USB2 port and the type-C is purely for PD power with no data, is that the plan?

If just power with no data then CCx and VBUS pins are needed.

Type-C does support USB2 or USB3 if the system does not need the USB2 port.

  • Hi Peter,

    Thank you for your reply.

So the system needs the legacy USB2 port and the type-C is purely for PD power with no data, is that the plan?

=> Yes, but USB2.0 and PD power would share 1 USB type-c port. is it possible?

If just power with no data then CCx and VBUS pins are needed.

=> for PD, just CCx and VBUS pins are needed. right?

and I should connect PD wall charger to TPS65988's input, and connect Tablet PC to TPS65988's 1 output.

do you have some reference for my usage?

    please check this issue. Thanks.

    Best regards,

    Chase

  • Hi Chase,

Type-C PD can be a power and data, so if you want to combine power with USB2 you can use 1 type C port which means you also need the DP/DN pins. if you want to support USB3.x then you will the other super speed pins.

What do you mean by wall charger to TPS65988 input? Which input and what do they intend to use with the tablet PC to PD? Do they need 2 ports, there is a 1 port version which is TPS65987 also.

I suggest to take a look at this user guide and some other apps note link below.
