DP83867E: TI solution suggestion

Dear Team,

Our customer have a new project idea and I would like to discuss it with you. They would like to build some cheap ethernet cable diagnostic meter. I have found some PHY chips from TI that can support TDR, for example DP838367.

Could you recommend the best PHY solution for ethernet cable diagnostics? Or do you have other suggestions on how to do that using some ICs from TI?

Hello Jimmy,

Yes TDR feature of 867 can be used for open/short fault's location detection.

Does the DP83867 TDR feature have good accuracy? What other information (like cable length, ...) is it possible to get from cable diagnostics using DP83867?

Hello Jimmy,

You may refer to TDR section of the datasheet. Accuracy is +/-1m of the fault location. It detects the open and short faults in the cable and give the locations of these faults. No it does not indicate the cable length.

Jimmy,

All our PHYs support TDR. But TDR featurelist will be more or less the same across PHYs.
