TCAN1042-Q1: CAN FD for Classical CAN 2.0B

Part Number: TCAN1042-Q1

Hi team,

I'd like to use a CAN FD transceiver, like the TCAN1042-Q1, to send & receive CAN2.0B. I understand that mixing CAN FD and CAN2.0B messages on the same bus can cause an issue, but can I use a CAN FD device to do just CAN2.0B?

Thanks,

Jacob

  • Jacob,

A CAN FD transceiver can absolutely transmit and receive a CAN2.0b message. The difference will come in the formatting of the frame, in particular, there’s a specific FD bit in the part of the frame before the ID that is dominant for an FD message, and recessive for a classical CAN message. This is how a receiving node can immediately determine a CAN FD vs. classical CAN message. The CAN FD and classical CAN formatting is controlled by the controller, the transceiver just translates the message from the controller to the CAN bus and back.

Please let us know if you have any other questions.

    Regards,

    Eric Hackett
