DS90UB948-Q1: Coax or STP

Part Number: DS90UB948-Q1

Hi Team,

Could customer use coax when PLCK=85MHz(1920*720*60fs)  or PCLK=39MHz(1280*480*60fs)?

Customer now use STP but they consider to change to coax because of cost.

I would like to ask

Do you have recommendation about coax or STP?

When PCLK is less than how much or the cable is shorter than how much, we could recommend customer use coax?

Now most customer use STP or coax?

  • Hi Amelie,

What is the current length of the STP cable you're using, and its insertion lost?  What is the insertion lost of the coax cable you're trying to switch to? Also, what serializer are you using?

    Thanks,

    Marielle

  • It is about 10-15m. Customer use 947 and 948.As for the insertion lost, customer also don't know the data...

  • Hi Amelie,

The 948 and 947 both support coax cables, but most of our customers use STP cable with these devices due to better noise rejection.

Since we don't not know all the characteristics and performance of your system, we cannot make clear recommendation for your system.

To determine if a coax will work in your system, you need to compare the signal performance of your current STP cable vs the desired coax cable. When comparing the insertion loss of a coax cable and STP cable, you must take into account that the STP cable will have a 2xSNR (Signal to Noise Ratio) performance than the coax due to it being differential signal.

An STP cable will reject noise better than the coax cable. Thus, switching to coax cable may affect the noise performance of your system in test such as radiate immunity and ESD testing.

    Thanks,
    Marielle
