TPS65994AD: What is the EC I2C used for?Can it work without EC I2C connecting?

Part Number: TPS65994AD

Hi,

In our MB design(Intel Tiger lake UP3+type-c with DP&USB3.1), there is no EC. So that I want to know what the EC I2C is used for?Is that some control  information between PD and EC?

  • Hi,

if you are designing with Intel SoC and TI PD, please follow Intel Tiger Lake platform design. You can request that from Intel directly.

EC is one of the main component in Tiger lake platform, the EC I2C is a master to PD and it is used to configure, to get information from PD. You can read the HI TRM for more information of the commands and format.

    Regards,

  • Hi,

If I just need to achieve the functions of USB-DP MUX and  power delivery, can TPS65994AD  finish itself without EC?As i known before, PD can finish it with a MUX IC and  do not need the EC if  OS do not need to get the information of PD. PD can be configure from the EEPROM of I2C2.Is that right?

  • Hi,

I don't know your design without seeing the schematic/diagram. The important information in DP as an example is to pass the HPD information to the host along with all the MUXes control when there is a change. If you take care of that you might not need an EC.

Yes you load the PD configuration into EEPROM.

    Regards.
