TPS65988: USB PD current Sink design with electronic Load

Part Number: TPS65988
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: TPS65987, TPS25750

Continuing the discussion,

a) I wanted to know if TPS65987/88 can support both USB BC 1.2  and USB C PD. Currently we are planning to a competitor part ( STUSB4500) which is Sink only PD. The problem is it does not support BC 1.2  (D+ and D- will be floating). Our application requires to sink 15W ( 5V 3A ) from a BC 1.2 capable source. Does TPS65987/88 support 3A during sink with an external load?

b) Also do I need any external IC's ( such as battery charger / 4 quad buck boost) to sink power? Can  I directly connect a DC load (PP_HV1/2) in CC mode to draw current?

  • Hi,

Yes the TPS65987/88 supports BC1.2 and USB C PD, please refer to the datasheet as it will show this in the features. Please refer to the BC1.2 section of the datasheet for more details. Also, yes you will be able to sink power directly to the load via PPHV.

However, I would still recommend taking a look at the TPS25750 as this device also supports BC1.2 and your sink capabilities.

    Thank you,

    Hari
