TCAN1046V-Q1: Supply current (Icc) when load resistor is 120ohm

Part Number: TCAN1046V-Q1

Hi all,

I got a request for supply current when load resistor is 120ohm at TCAN1046V-Q1 and TCAN1044V-Q1, TCAN1044AV-Q1. Is it possible for you to check those parameters and share the data? The picture below is the example of TCAN1046V-Q1.

  • Hi RYO,

The supply current needed during a CAN transceiver during its dominant state is primarily based on the current required to maintain its output voltage across the bus load. For example, with a typical bus load of 60-ohms (two 120-ohm termination resistors in parallel), the current required to maintain a 3.0V differential is 50mA. If the load resistance is halved to 120-ohms, the required current will also decrease by about half (output voltage may also increase slightly, so this is not linear across all loads). Bus load has minimal impact on the current draw of the transceiver while in recessive mode because the recessive bias is relatively weak, so this will remain about the same for 60 or 120-ohm loads.

Keep in mind that the average current draw of the transceiver depends on how often the device is transmitting and the data contained in each frame. For example, while transmitting a CAN frame with 50% dominant bits, the average current draw will be [ Icc(dom) + Icc(rec) ] * 50%. While idle, the transceiver will be in a recessive state.

Let me know if you have any other questions.

    Eric Schott
