TPS65987D: Design questions

Hello,

Questions:

  1. is BC1.2 required for PD? Could D+/D- from USB-C connector be connected directly to TPS65987D BC1.2 and further to the µC? Will that work?
  2. TPS65987D has 3 I2C interfaces. Assuming the µC to be master; should I2C#1 or IC2#2 be used?
  3. Can you provide schematics or block diagram how to connect USB-C connector to TPS65987D and µC for a power source and sink system, please?

Thanks and Best Regards,

Hans

  • Haris,

Here are answers to your questions.:

#1.  BC1.2 is not required as part of the PD standard, but many customers add it for support of legacy devices that are connected using type A to type C cables.  It is possible to route through the DP/DN pins of the TPS65987D with very careful routing and still have fairly good signal integrity.  It will definitely work for LS and FS signals, HS signaling will require very careful layout.

#2.  I2C1 and I2C3 can be used as slave interface ports, but most of our EVM's use I2C1, so that is what I would suggest.

#3  We have a complete DRP (source and sink) implementation with a MCU connection shown on our EVM.  https://www.ti.com/tool/TPS65987EVM
