DP83869EVM: 100 Mbps Media Converter - DP83869EVM - Strap Only

Part Number: DP83869EVM
Other Parts Discussed in Thread: DP83869HM, DP83869, TIDA-00306

Hello

we want to design DP83869evm to send data using the 100 Mbps Media Converter.

The setup is the following.

PC 1 ---------------------> Ethernet ---------------------> RJ45 connector DP83869EVM ----------> Media converter ---------------------> SFP cage  + SFP connector Ethernet ----------------->  PC2.

The speed of the ethernet link is set to be align with the 100 Mbps. The PC are windows computer.

The main objective is to use the DP83869HM as a media converter Copper Fiber and transmit directly information with only strap configuration.

However, based on the following configuration we are not able to transmist information, there is no answer when pinging both computer. we used the following configuration for the strap :

100 Mbps Media Converter

JTAG_TDO / GPIO_1 ->  OPMODE_0 : Pull-up to VDDI

RX_D3 OPMODE_1 : OPEN

RX_D2 OPMODE_2 : Pull-up to VDDI

LED_1 : AUX_IOVDD

LED_ 2 : AUX_IOVDD

RX_CTRL / MIRROR_EN : Cooper Miror Enable

RX_CLK_LINK_LOSS : Link Loss pas thru Disabled

My question are the following.

- I saw on the forum that is was possible to use the media converter configuration with only the strap configuration. Can you please confirm that it is possible ?

- Do you see any falws in our configuration or any data that need to be configure ? Do you have any idea to fix the problem ?

- We use the USB software for debug purpose, is there any register we can check in order to confirm that the link is up or not ?

Any other help will be appreciated.

Best regards,

Ynouss DIALLO

  • Hello Ynouss DIALLO,

    You should be able to configure the DP83869 device for media conversion without any strap.

    Please refer the below documents to understand DP83869 configurations.

    https://www.ti.com/lit/an/snla318/snla318.pdf

    Regarding the configuration, it is best to sketch a block diagram - drawn or hand written to understand the implementation.

  • Hello Kallikuppa,

    Thank you for your response. But my question was using the DP83869evm with only the strap configuration. I already used the datasheet "Understanding different modes of operation in DP83869" to configure the evaluation board but it is not working accordly

    This is the block schematic of the setup :

    We applied the following configuratiion

    Unfortunetly your answer does not help me.

    Can you please give me more answer to help me ?

  • Hello Ynouss DIALLO,

    Thanks for the inputs. Please attach the drawing to view.

    Please refer to https://www.ti.com/tool/TIDA-00306

    Yes, you should be able to use the EVM as a media converter with only strapping of pins.

  • Hello Sreenivasa,

    I'm not using the TIDA-00306 Media converter but the DP83869EVM. And as state i already dive into the documentation but it's not working.

    My question is :

    - Base on the strap configuration, is that something that need to be done to communicate using the media converter on the DP83869EVM ? I tried the configuration present on the spec and it's not working

    - In order to debug and find a way out, is there any register that i can look into to check that the link is up ?

    Best reargds

    Ynouss

  • Hello Ynouss DIALLO,

    Please read through the design guide for TIDA-00306.

    One of the option uses DP83869 EVM as media converter and configurations are listed in detail. This should help you to a good extent.

    BMSR Register Field can be used

  • Thank you Sreenivasa,

    During our investigation we found the documentation you suggest to read the "TIDA-00306". Unfortunetly after using the configuration strap suggest, the communication was still not working.

    The configuration test propose in the document is slighlty different from the one we are using because it is using two EVM to demonstrate the communication by  putting them in EMI chamber.

  • Hello Ynouss DIALLO,

    Please share the block diagram of the setup and the configurations you have made.

  • Hi,

    For the Configuration used on the board :

    100 Mbps Media Converter

    JTAG_TDO / GPIO_1 ->  OPMODE_0 : Pull-up to VDDI

    RX_D3 OPMODE_1 : OPEN

    RX_D2 OPMODE_2 : Pull-up to VDDI

    LED_1 : AUX_IOVDD

    LED_ 2 : AUX_IOVDD

    RX_CTRL / MIRROR_EN : Cooper Miror Enable

    RX_CLK_LINK_LOSS : Link Loss pas thru Disabled

    For The block diagram it design as follow using computer :

    PC 1 ---------------------> Ethernet ---------------------> RJ45 connector DP83869EVM ----------> Media converter ---------------------> SFP cage  + SFP connector Ethernet ----------------->  PC2.

    The speed of the ethernet link is set to be align with the 100 Mbps. The PC are windows computer.

  • Hello Ynouss DIALLO,

    Could you please share the capture.png and media_converter.png diagrams.

    I understand the RJ45 of the EVM is connected to one of the PC.

    To what board does the fiber connector of the EVM connect  before being connected to another PC.

    Do you have 2 DP83869 EVMs or 1 ?

    Regards,

    Sreenivasa
