MAX3232E: Background for add 1μF capacitor on new revision datasheet

Guru 19645 points
Part Number: MAX3232E

MAX3232E datasheet on new revision (Rev E) is add "1-µF capacitor is required between VCC and GND to meet the specified IEC 16000-4-2 rating" from old revision.

Please let me know why add 1μF is need additionally.

One customer is worried about ESD rating become weak by Die Revision, and they are guess that add 1μF mean reinforce the weaken ESD rating.

We hope to confirm MAX3232E: Rev D and Rev E are differ ESD specification or not.

Best regards,

Satoshi

  • The ESD protection diodes cannot dissipate the energy of an ESD pulse, they just shunt the current into the power supply, where it is eaten by the decoupling capacitors. (The total energy of an ESD pulse is so small that the voltage of the capacitor does not rise by a harmful amount.)

The chip has not changed. Even in the old revision, ESD was tested with this capacitor.

(I do not know what's so special about the SOIC package.)

  • Thanks for the technical explanation Clemens!

    Hi Satoshi-san,

The revisions referenced here are only datasheet versions and do not reflect changes in silicon. No difference is expected between devices sold with Rev D or Rev E datasheet.
