TPS65987D: 100 Watt configuration for USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM

Please help.

What ever I do can't source more than 3 A (real number 2.84 A at 20 V) from USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM board.

I even can not get 75 W (5 A, 15 V) for my 95 W sink (Surface Book).

Project file setting looks good to me. 

Do you see 100W advertisement with any other Power Adapter? How did you ensure that the cable is working fine?

If yes, would you please share your file with me?

Those cables are branded cables, what is the chance all these cables are faulty?

(I don't have any other adapter to test the cables)

You mentioned that you dont have an analyzer, how to you check if the device is advertising 5A or not? 

I checked your project and I can see 5A advertisement in the trace.

I am using the on board FTDI chip on USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM board and Application Customization Tool.

Although I am advertising 5A at all nominated voltages, it is being shown as 3A. Here there are some images:

In the image below it shows 3A 20V but it should be 5A 20V.

Then the page data disappears:

In image below it shows Active Contract RDO:

Then it changes:

The Sink Request RDO changes as well:

In image bellow, the Power Staus shows as Source:

But it changes to Sink after whuile:

And the image bellow show the Status register: (Lots of Unknown and BIST is still in progress)

These are my observations in regards to USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM board:

1. The J202 header should be at SNK position, otherwise the Source board wouldn't start working, is this expected behavior?

2.  After the Source board starts working, I change the J202 to SRC then I use Application Customization Tool, but it doesn't seems it  makes any difference, I will get the same results regardless of J202 position (even if I don't connect the Jumper).

3. It seems data from USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM board is wrong, or format is different, because there are too many unknown fields in registers or a page shows empty.

4. Is it possible that my USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM board's TPS65987D firmware is old or buggy?

First, one thing about those USB-C cables, those I mentioned in my previous post.

The Rankie USB C to USB C 100W Cable and Cygnett Armoured 5A/100W are genuine 100 W, but I checked the Samsung USB-C to USB-C 100W Cable on Samsung website and it is a 60 W cable, but the retailer; mistakenly, is advertising it as 100 W cable.

Second, the following images are showing registers in my custom board, using either of Rankie or Cygnett USB-C 100 W cables:

As you can see, the 5A 20V is selected, and those issues on USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM board aren't appearing here. (I am using Aardvark adapter).

The only problem on my board is; using either Rankie or Cygnett USB-C 100 W cables, I am measuring something around 3.19 A  at 20 V on my power supply.

Using Samsung 60 W USB-C cable, I am measuring 2.98 A at 20 V on my power supply, which very good.

When I first connect my custom board to the sink (Surface Book 95 Watt), the initial current would be something between 3.4 A ~ 3.9 A but after some seconds (4~5 seconds), it drops to around 3.19 A, why is this happening?

Hi Majid, 

 " Jumper J202 is used to select which TPS65987D is being updated by connecting the SPI Chip Select to either the Source or Sink TPS65987D.". Did EVM boot up with the FTDI/ Aardvaark Adapter connected? if yes, try w/o debugger connected.

You can check version field in debug mode to ensure that the PD controller is booting up from correct patch version. Also, you can fill in custom value in 0x06 register and verify the same after boot up to see if the App config contents are valid.

I don't think so, what you are trying is very basic functionality and many customers are already using it.

If the contract is still in place with 5A capability please check if the Sink is drawing less current. I would suggest you to test with a known  constant load.

I ordered the following devices to be able to check my Surface Book's charging adapter capability to make sure it can truly sink 95 W of power.

This way I can check it against my custom board as well as USB-C-PD-DUO-EVM board.

Hi Majid,

All you need to ensure is that the PD controller is able to establish 5A contract with the Sink. The sink (Surface Book) can draw upto the negotiated current based on its requirement. PN: the sink current depends on factors such as battery level, application running...

Load capacity can be tested using a traditional DC load. You can connect a non-Type-C PD DC load directly on the PPHV pin of Sink EVM for testing your custom board (Custom board as source and EVM as sink).
